Mike is a rookie on the scene. He is eager to help and to fit in with Dr. Irwin's team of investigators. Mike may be bright, but he is new at the job and learns from his mistakes. He lacks the intuition that the more seasoned professionals have. He is here to perform his job while pleasing Dr. Irwin and gaining confidence and training. In the story, he also serves as a bit of comic relief but more importantly he divides Irwin's attention so that Cal can investigate the shed while being somewhat isolated. Mike is nervous about his lack of experience but excited about each opportunity he has to gain experience.
